Take a Scenic Drive to Grand Lake

October 15, 2018

Located 30 minutes from Winter Park is a little gem of a town called Grand Lake.  Nestled in the mountains outside the western edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, the town is a gateway to year-round recreation.

The name of the town says it all – the lake is grand. Yet, it is not the grandest lake, as directly to the west is Lake Granby (Noted as one of the largest lakes in Colorado). As you drive from Winter Park on highway 40 to 34 into Grand Lake, the road winds along three large lakes with sweeping views of the Rocky Mountains in the backdrop.  It's a drive that will have you in awe and wanting to come back for more scenic trips and adventure at your fingertips.

In the winter, Trail Ridge Road (the road that takes you from the town of Grand Lake into Rocky Mountain National Park) is closed.  However, there is still good reason to drive on 34 to Grand Lake where a winter wonderland awaits.

From cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and world class snowmobiling, there are acres upon acres to explore the grand outdoors.  Not to mention, spending an afternoon walking around downtown will have you admiring the quaint mom and pop shops with yet a vibrant town feel.  There are some fantastic restaurants and noteworthy gift shops to find your favorite Colorado treasures.  Downtown sits directly above the  marina providing a pedestrian friendly connection to the lake.  It is a true winter get-a-way for people of all ages.

Be sure to add a visit to Grand Lake on your next visit to Winter Park and Grand County.  The beauty will have your soul wanting to explore more of the untouched land and mountains that surround the town.
